Project 5: Kerned Interventions: Process

I worked with Lauren, Brett, and Jasmine on this project….

We chose Brett’s Haiku….. to immortalize on the wall in the stairwell of the first floor of Old Main….

IMG_20130410_144545

We decided on a font and size and put the letters in an illustrator document to send off to the tech shop to burn for us…

Here we are working to put the words up and Kern the chit out of em…

As you see…. Lauren mastered the art of Ladder fu in layin down straight lines for Brett to stool dance the letters on…. Jasmine was quietly all over the place… apprentice Stool dancer… tape puter oner…. Opinion giver…..whereas I am not sure what I did… mostly get stalked by the ladder, and move letters around a lil lol

I present to you the viewer…. SYNTHESIS and ARROGANT…..

Project 4: Constrained Systems: Reflection

Upon reflection…

It was the project I liked the most because it gave me the opportunity to really create something rather than do things according to such specific set rules…

I was not totally happy with the outcome as I did not get a chance to print them out multiple times and adjust in between prints…. They looked different when I saw them from a distance…  I work at a slow pace unfortunately and sometimes my inspiration doesnt always come out when I want it to….

The feed back from the class was most helpful as well as it gave me important views from the other artists in the ways in which I could make SYNTHESIS and ARROGANT better.

I really needed to spend more time developing the letter forms of SYNTHESIS better so that they flowed better together…. the “T” and “I” really should have not been designed to not dip like that from the top or bottom as it didnt continue to flow throughout the letters… The “H” is way to narrow while the “E” is to wide… “N” by far is still my favorite letter of them all…

Having worked on kerning in later projects gives an added consideration to it as well… Especially depending on the size I show it at in order to maintain readability…

ARROGANT was made to be simple, direct, in your face, and to the point; kinda like an arrogant person would lol…  I think I could have achieved that better with a bolder stroke in the middle of the letters, instead of looking like you could just push on it and the letter comes crumbling down.. as the instructor suggested…

Interestingly enough (I say that cuz of the pattern it made) I almost lost all my work because the amount of boxes I made took up so much memory that my computer couldnt handle it… I had to close out of everything else on the computer just to save… but not before the program changed the fill on the boxes to empty……check it out….

Project 4: Constrained Systems: Process: SYNTHESIS cont.

Started experimenting with letters that were not going to be in the final project to see what I wanted to use…

IMG_20130410_144403

I chose the bottom “Z” as my starting point on the actual letters that were to be used in SYNTHESIS….

Decided to make a template to use to design the font so that each letter fit nicely together and was spaced exactly the same….

template

Printed the template out and drew some more to finalize the font before I digitized the bastards…..

IMG_20130410_144704

Then I picked the ones out that I liked, took a pic of them, uploaded the pic into the template so I could begin drawing them digitally…

Drew the outline of the sketched letter and flipped it over a few times to get symetry….

Project 4: Constrained Systems: Process: SYNTHESIS

I tested out this particular font that I  liked and thought it actually looked like what I was going for with SYNTHESIS… Square modules was the choice I made for both SYNTHESIS and ARROGANT… But I knew I wanted an organic feel to SYNTHESIS so I wanted to go small boxes….I tested to see how small I was going to go with the grid and decided to go all the way with it…. But of course….

Project 4: Constrained Systems: Research

The 2 words I had to create font for were “Synthesis” and “Arrogant”…..

To me Synthesis is the combination of objects to form a whole.. they are combined perfectly…

Arrogant is someone being overly confident and wants to let you know how good they are no matter what… to the point of annoying you..

So I went to the web in search of as many relevant definitions as I could lol
