Zipcar is a service that allows you to rent a car for a few hours. It’s perfect for running to the grocery store to pick up a few things, or to go to any Warrior Weekend events! There are zipcars located all across WSU’s main campus, including parking structures #2, #8, and many surface lots. Anybody 18 and up can make an account and rent a car, which includes insurance and gas. Rates are on the website and students can receive a free voucher for their first few drives.
Uber is a taxicab for the modern age. You can call for an Uber exclusively from your smartphone, and it’s all cashless – you pay your driver via your credit or debit card that’s attached to your Uber account in the mobile app. It’s very convenient if you want to get driven someplace, spend the day there, and then get driven back – Ubers are available throughout the day and most of the night. You can even split your fare with other Uber users if you carpool!
The Weekend Shuttle runs Friday and Saturday nights, taking students from main campus to Downtown and Greektown. It’s a great opportunity for you and your friends to explore Downtown without having to pay for transportation! And don’t worry, you can party all night long – responsibly, of course – since the shuttle runs until 2:30 AM. All students can use the shuttle for free throughout the school year.
Last fall, the Rec rolled out a new bike rental program for Wayne State students to use. They’re really shiny pieces of equipment, and they ride like a dream! If you want to rent a bike for a few hours or a day, this is a really nice way to do that with low commitment. Prices are low, and the bikes themselves are pretty futuristic. The rental even includes a U-lock! More information can be found at the link above, including rates and the fine print.
