What SAAB Members did during Spring Break!

SAAB members did multiple things during Spring Break a few weeks ago.

Some members simply worked, some went back to their hometowns to spend time with family, some went out of state (Florida and Illinois), and others volunteered right here in Michigan–Detroit to be exact!

Of course, since a huge component of SAAB pertains to graduation, all members studied thoroughly during the break 🙂

Alternative Spring Break Detroit

Two SAAB brothers participated in ASBD from March 9th-13th. For Professional Development Chair Terrel White it was his fifth consecutive time participating while it was Dwight McDonald’s (Public Relations Chair) second consecutive (and second overall) year helping to lend a hand in Detroit!

Other SAAB members have also participated in ASBD in the past.

Pistons Game

On March 15th, a few SAAB brothers and a Morris Hood member went to see the Pistons host the Indiana Pacers.

Fun experience! Great bonding time! We even ran into another SAAB brother at the Palace who happened to be raising money for charity.

Unfortunately, the Pistons lost (in overtime) after leading by over 20 points.

SAAB Brother featured on ASCE website, interviewed by Southend

Congratulations to one of our SAAB brothers, Jayvon Garth, for being named a ‘New Face of Civil Engineering’ by the American Society of Civil Engineers! He was also interviewed by the South End Newspaper in reference to the ASCE feature. Oh, he wasn’t just interviewed; he was on the cover of the February issue!

Delta and SAAB Collaboration-1/17/14

Last Friday, right after our general body meeting, we helped to host Delta Sigma Theta’s “Battle of the Sexes” event. The event was a part of their Founder’s Week, which ran from January 13th-17th.

Ultimately, the guys won the competition by a final score of 5-4. One of our SAAB Brothers got the last point!

Based on the success and fun factor of it all, we wish to collaborate with the Deltas again!

SAAB showing support!

Members of SAAB recently showed their support for the Wayne Student African Society (WASS) at their first annual Charity Night, which took place on November 22nd.

It was a fun night that had some good entertainment (singing, poetry, live music) and wonderful food.

The most important part of the night, however, was having everyone contribute to help raise about $500 for two charities–Afripads and Nyaka AIDS Orphan Project, respectively!

The event wasn’t about WASS or SAAB; it was about helping two great causes!

Check out some pictures of the event below:

SAAB Summer

This past summer was a productive one for our chapter. Our members showed their dedication and contributed their time to help out in various ways.

Here are some examples:

On May 8th, members of our Executive board spoke at Westside Christian Academy (located in Redford) during an after school program called Boys 2 Books. We explained to them the importance of college, and most significantly, the importance of graduating.

We drove over 1 hour to volunteer at the Michigan International Speedway in August. While there, we cooked, sold food and beverages (and made quite a bit of money), cleaned up, and had a great time!

During both move-in days, we helped freshmen and upperclassmen move into the different campus dormitories and apartments.

Lawrence Robinson and Decores Crawford were two out of several members that helped out.

And, of course, we had a table at Festi-Fall.

Aaron Spencer (front),VP of Internal Affairs. Climmet Grimes,VP of External Affairs, is right behind him. Andre Gilford, former president, is next to Climmet. Far left–in the white t-shirt–is Dwight McDonald, our Membership Chair.

Study Sessions: Academic Success Center (UGL) from 10a-2p & 2-6p on Mon., Tues., & Thurs. Oh, and the artwork is by Che Baker, our Historian.

We hope to continue our activeness both on and around campus during this school year.

Expect more updates about other happenings!
