Your New Year Calendar: Big Rocks First!

This blog post is the start of an ongoing series of personal/professional effectiveness tips (#PEtips) to help you become your Most Effective Self—the Empowered Warrior.

The start of a new year is the best time to really evaluate not only what’s on your calendar, but how you’re spending your time. Personal and professional effectiveness isn’t about cramming as much as possible into your day, but doing the right things, at the right time, for the right reasons. Are you spending your time on the right things—activities and effort that move you toward your personal or professional goals? If you don’t feel like this is true for you, then you might want to consider planning your time with using time-blocking, placing “Big Rocks First”, an approach made popular by Dr. Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Habit 3: Put First Things First, available to read at no cost to you in your Accelerate book library.)

You may find it helpful to look ahead and create a baseline calendar for yourself now before your schedule gets inundated with meetings, requests, and projects that may not necessarily step you closer to the most important things you need to accomplish in you day/week/month—including work tasks and the self-care that we often let slip to the wayside when we get overly busy. An example base calendar is shown below:

  1. Log onto Academica (a.wayne.edu).
  2. Click Employee Resources link under Resources.
  3. Click Other Resources.
  4. Click Accelerate Employee Development Tools.

(Always notify your manager or supervisor prior to registration and/or attendance of training.)
