Project 3.2 Letterform (Physical form of “WERB”)
We received our physical letterform, which is made out of polyurethane foam. I have decided to paint mine silver with a blue trim. I also put a shinny coat to make it look like laminate. The class was told to make the letter look professional. I made sure my edges were painted smoothly. I also wanted to give the letter a feel as though it were a sign outside for people to see as they drive by. To me it looks like a cut out letter form for a logo. Which, was the whole idea. I put three coats of latex primer because the foam was soaking the primer and had a spotty look all over until I reached the 3 coat of primer. Over all I like the look of my project. The polyurethane is manageable and easy to carry. It is light weight. In a way I am happy we did not use wood for those factors. However, light is not always the best in other instances. The foam can bend and break easily. I could tell when I was painting that I had to be very careful. That is also due to the thin strokes I have on my letterform.
It is very interesting to witness my own project as a 3D physical form. This is why I enjoyed this project. Sometimes when we deign on screen we don’t think about aspects of witnessing our work physically to the public. Sometimes we could lose key details for that reason. The project may or may not look better on a physical billboard or outside business logo. It is interesting seeing how everything shapes out. I can see how printing can be very expensive if it is not a look a client would want and that it is the important realize the details. Critiquing the work with your clients or fellow workers is important to help catch those unseen details.
