Dearborn Public Schools, AVID Tutor

Dearborn Public Schools are seeking tutors to be part of our AVID family.  We have implemented the Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) framework with students in 7th and 8th grade at Salina Intermediate School and Stout Middle School.

The AVID elective class meets daily and uses an established curriculum. It includes WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading), study skills, and tutorials by trained college tutors, with the goal of preparing students for college.

The AVID tutors will receive 16 hours of training in AVID methodologies, with a focus on the inquiry learning process and the AVID collaborative tutorial process.   Tutors will then facilitate each stage of the tutorial process by supporting problem-solving strategies with students in study groups (max 7: student: tutor ratio) with the assistance of an AVID elective course teacher.

This opportunity benefits the students, the community and you as a college student. The students will have strong role models that take an active part in developing the academic and personal strength and pride that are essential to college readiness.  This allows students to be exposed to a diverse range of interests as they connect with tutors.

The college-age tutors will gain experience and skills in being part of a collaborative leadership team that includes, administrators, teachers and students.  Tutors will expand their experiences and learn new skills and problem-solving strategies that will help them in college and in the work force.  The tutors will have opportunities to practice presentation skills and work with a diverse range of English Leaner students.  The AVID experience provides an excellent way to build a resume that includes relevant experiences and references from the AVID District Directors and building administrators.


8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs

$10.00 per hour and includes paid training
