The Friendship Circle of Michigan – Special Needs Camp Counselor

The Special Needs Counselor provides a safe and encouraging environment where youth with special needs are valued and given the opportunity to explore new experiences. Campers may have developmental, physical, neurological, learning and/or mental impairments. Additionally, working with teen volunteers to increase socialization and engagement of teens and children with special needs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • High school graduate
  • Pursuing or possessing a degree in special education, education, recreation, social work, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology or related field preferred.
  • Desire to work with children
  • Able to actively participate in a variety of activities, including swimming
  • Must work well in a team
  • Must pass background check


  • At least one year experience working with children/teens
  • Experience working with children/teens with special needs preferred
  • Experience in a school or camp setting preferred

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe environment of guidance and leadership to 4-5 campers with special needs
  • Assist campers in increasing independence, experiencing community membership, increasing social skills, building peer relations
  • Adapt activities as needed to allow participation of campers
  • Provide positive reinforcement or other behavioral intervention, as needed
  • Provide individual assistance as needed
  • Maintain constant supervision and campers and teen volunteers
  • Must have the auditory, visual and physical ability to respond to critical incidents

Job: M-F, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM
