GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Nutrition and Wellness Specialist supervises and executes menu planning, shopping, ordering, and food preparation in accordance with Common Ground’s Wellness policy and within the budgetary guidelines of the agency. Is responsible for ensuring all food service functions of the Crisis Residential Unit are met while adhering to all food safety and sanitation practices. Partners with a trauma informed, recovery oriented multidisciplinary team to optimize wellness and healthy lifestyle choices.


  • Maintains a supportive, empathic, and engaging environment within the food service area
    • Plans, orders and monitors food service menus and meals for up to 16 people daily
    • Posts menus weekly and serves meals at regularly scheduled times
    • Monitors food preparation methods, portion sizes, and presentation of food
    • Supervises consumers that participate in kitchen and food preparation activities
    • Maintains cost control, budget, and kitchen inventory. Assures meal preparation costs adhere to program budget
    • Plans modified diets to meet the health and dietary needs of consumers with dietary restrictions
    • Maintains established standards of sanitation, safety, and food preparation and storage in adherence with State of Michigan Licensing guidelines.
    • Maintains an orderly, sanitary, and safe kitchen
    • Assures the proper care and maintenance of all food service equipment, identifies equipment needs for food preparation, and services and assists in purchasing equipment as needed
    • Facilitates groups that educate consumers as to healthy lifestyle options, nutritional choices, and food preparation skills. Also teaches skills of daily living in cooking, meal planning and preparation
    • Drives CRU program vehicle to purchase proper food service inventory. Purchases appropriate food service items from vendors as needed
    • Responsible for occasional meals, snacks, or other special events as assigned
    • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable combination of experience and education
    • ServSafe other comparable food preparation certification preferred
    • Certified Peer Support Specialist preferred
    • Previous experience in food preparation and service preferred
    • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
    • 1+ year experience working with people with disabilities


  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Ability to cook, use fresh nutritional ingredients, and prepare those ingredients in a healthful manner
    • Knowledge of mental health recovery and the role of nutrition in mental health
    • Ability to apply trauma informed principles and values with knowledge, decisions, and treatment of all people served.
    • Ability to relate to diverse populations which include a variety of age, sex, economic and educational backgrounds
    • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking/decision making skills.
    • Able to work with a multi-disciplinary team successfully
    • Knowledge of current behavioral management and de-escalation techniques
    • Ability to deal with volatile situations in a safe, calm, and caring manner
    • Knowledge of and ability to use basic intervention skills
    • Proficiency in MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook
    • Demonstrated ability to work positively with co-workers and consumers
    • Basic computer skills


  • The work environment may subject staff to behavioral and medical problems that could be physically hazardous
    • The duties of this job require intense physical mobility and lifting of up to 25 lbs
    • Must be willing to cross-train as a Recovery Coach and perform these duties when assigned
    • Must pass a comprehensive background check as required by the State of Michigan and licensing requirements

    • Local travel required and use of personal vehicle during work hours
    • Must be willing to transport persons served using personal or agency vehicles
