Warrior weekends in the D – Welcome March 2014
MARCH ALREADY?!? Whaaaaa? Anyway –
Friday, February 28
Spirit of Detroit – A play
Charles H. Wright Museum (Free and walkable!)
Come watch U of M students perform a play about Detroit’s 1967 rebellion/ riots. Many attribute this series of events as a major cause for Detroit’s cause, many say no. Come and form your own opinion. This performance will give you a more personal view (PS- I know I know, I wish WSU students were performing it too.)
Friday Night Live Tribute to Jazz Legends
7 pm & 8:30 pm
DIA ( Free and walkable!)
Join Detroit’s own veteran jazz vocalist Naima Shambourger in honoring jazz legends Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis and Dexter Gordon. This tribute features pianist Sven Andersen along with Bob Hurst (bass), Sean Dobbins (drums) and Vincent Bowens (saxophones). Yay free music! 🙂
Saturday, March 1
Clark Park Winter Carnival
12 pm- 5 pm
Clark Park (in Southwest) – Free!
Roasting marshmallows, ice skating, petting zoo and horse carriage rides. All free and for a great cause. If you haven’t experienced the rich history of one of our special Detroit neighborhoods, Southwest (AKA Mexicantown), seriously get over there. It is rich with culture, hope and a community of people who really care about their city. This is the perfect opportunity to get involved! See you there. Nos vemos alla.
Moon Over Buffalo (A WSU Production)
Hillberry Theatre (walkable!)
“A whimsical comedy as two try to save their theatre and their marriage.” The word whimsical has always just drawn me right in…
Tuesday, March 4
Many local bakeries
Not exactly a weekend, but SURELY worth mentioning. How unique is Detroit? We’re filled with different pockets from all over the world. One of them is polish people in Hamtramck and the poles (me being one wink wink) specialize in making Paczkis (okay, not all poles can do that, me being one who can’t). A Paczki is basically the fattest doughnut you can get and the country has deemed it socially acceptable to eat them once a year on Fat Tuesday (March 4th this year). Fortunately for us, we are surrounded people who can make these delicious things. Visit the website linked here and go out there and explore new places!
