About
Hi! My name is Jaimie and I am currently a Freshman at Wayne State University! I graduated from a very small-town school, and now I live in an on-campus apartment, so it is a big change for me. I am involved in cross country, many community-service projects, and am also in the Honor's college. In my spare time, I enjoy reading a good book or watching any kind of movie that piques my interest at the time!!!

So I have not updated my blog in a longggg time!!! Crazy Right? Maybe it is because of the crazy school year I have been having!! WOW!!! So busy!! But who isn’t? When you are not doing school work, you are doing some extracurricular activity/work, when you are not doing some extracurricular activity/work, you are hanging out with friends.

Lately, I have been job searching… is it just me or is it unusually hard to get a job right now? I know Michigan’s economy is bad, especially in Detroit, but how much qualification do you need to work at McDonalds??? Nowadays it seems like you need some kind of college degree to work ANYWHERE!!! And I have submitted my application to at least a dozen positions, and I have not even gotten an e-mail of rejection back from anyone. Is it so much to ask to just get a rejection letter? Is my resume THAT bad??? Someone please enlighten me. It probably sounds like I am ranting, but I am seriously interested in knowing. Also, not getting a job at a fastfood restaurant is pretty bad, but now I am worrying about my furture job after college. If I cannot get a very simple job now, how am I going to get a job after I receive my college diploma? It is just something more to worry about…. and not just for me, but for everyone!!!

circle k

Anyway….. this school year I am going to try to get involved more with some of the clubs around campus. Right now I am interested in the Honor’s Student Association and Circle K because they mostly do a lot of volunteer work , and I love helping out with that kind of stuff, especially since I never really had much of a chance to do that in highschool. And there are SO many opportunities to do your part in Detroit. I love it!!! I think that if many people help from Wayne State, it will impact the surrounding communities in a great way. Even if everyone from Wayne State volunteered just one day out of the school year. If you want any information on some of the clubs at Wayne, just comment on this post and I can give you the information. OR you can go to for more info.

What else can I say about this new school year? Well, I can tell you one thing, my freshman year was way easier for me than my sophomore year!!! But I expected that….. I just have to hit the books harder I guess. When I was fretting to my parents over my classes this year, they told me all I can do is my best and they are totally right!!! I DO try my best…I go to all my lectures, read and take notes, study for hours on end, etc. etc., so I guess that is all I can do. So if you are worrying about this year’s classes, just take the advice my parents gave me :)

Speaking of classes, the most entertaining class I have this year is my Intro to Theatre class. I am taking it as a part of my general education requirements and I love it!! My professor is trying to expose us to all different kinds of theatre and it is really interesting. We watched this play..I think it is called Marat/Sade. It is French, and it is really different from any play I have ever seen. It really makes you think and I thought it was totally awesome, but you have to like historical fiction things. I don’t want to tell you all about it, but if you have the chance you should watch it for sure. I will tell you this…it is a play of a play performed by the occupants of an insane asylum and the audience(you) are the upper-class French watching the play. I guess during those days it was a form of entertainment for upper-class French people to tour insane asylums. Wierd right? Yes, definitely wierd. But anyway, the class is interesting. And tomorrow night, for anyone who is interested, there is a totally free play at the Hillberry Theatre (which is right next to Old Maine on Cass Avenue) called the Laramie Project. It is a world-wide premiere, and it is a true story about the murder of Mathew Sheperdson. I will be there, and if you are ineterested, it starts at 8:00pm, but be there at 7:30pm. I know it is late notice, but I hope you all read this blog in time.

School Spirit!!!!! :P

School Spirit!!!!! :P

OOOO….an I almost forgot to talk about Wayne State Homecoming…. I went to the game and it was a lot of fun!!! I got my face painted(yes I am cool like that..SCHOOL SPIRIT!!!), and the game was definitely intense!!! At first it looked like Ashland was going to win, but then Wayne caught up and they kept going back and forth. In the end, in the last minute of the game, Wayne won!!! It was crazy!!! It was the best homecoming game I have ever been to(out of both high school and college). Also, I got to see the Wayne State marching band in action for the first time!!! The marching band is new this year and they add a lot of school spirit to our games. It makes it feel more like you are at a college game than a highschool game. They play really well too!! If you are interested in joining the marching band, I can give you the names of some people who would be more than willing to help you get involved :)

Football Players Gathering Before the Game

So with that, I will wrap up this hodge-podge of a blog. It is just a recap of the goings on at Wayne State and my life. I am definitely going to write more in my blog to keep everyone updated. I wish you all luck with time-managing, and hope that your school year is off to a good start!! :)

Decisions

Aug 13 2009 | 2 Comments

Recently, I have made a difficult, yet important, decision in my life. I decided to voluntarily withdraw from the WSU cross country team to concentrate more on my studies. I have learned a lot from the time I spent on the team, and I will take that information with me and apply it to my future endeavors. I also will take away a lot of positive experiences and friendships. I really will miss being part of a competitive atmosphere, but I still plan on continuing running because I really enjoy it. Hopefully, I can enter some races too! So here is an explanation about how running has impacted my life…

Beach Running = Hard ;)

Beach Running = Hard ;)

There are so many people out there that love running, and others that cannot stand it. As for me, I am one of those people that love running. I started running in middle school for the track team, just like so many kids at that age. But not all of those kids that joined the track team during middle school stuck with it after leaving school. I was one of the people that stuck with running after leaving middle school, through high school, and into college. Running is part of my life right now. It has so many good things about it that I really cannot leave it out of my life for a long period of time. Yes, it can get boring, hard, and “sucky”, but those few days you do feel good erase all the negative parts about running. I bet I am not the only one that would agree with that. Here are a few examples of why I love to run:

1.) Stress Reliever:- Yah, I bet that is the most ridiculous thing you have heard. How can running relief your stress?? How can doing something hard relieve stress? Wouldn’t it just make you more stressed out? The answer is no. Running frees up my mind from everything that goes around me. When I am down, sad, TIRED, any kind of feeling, I go out for a run. After that run, I feel like nothing has happened, at least for the moment. When I am angry at something, stressed from studying, upset because of a bad grade, I go out for a run. During the run, everything just clears out of my head. It is an amazing feeling that I can’t really explain. When I finish my run out of breath, I feel happy for some reason. Studies actually have proved that running can be an anti-depressant. So to me, why would someone take medication if exercise can keep you healthy AND be an anti-depressant? So that is reason number one, when I go out for a run, everything that is bothering me leaves me.

The Christmas in Ida Run- it was below freezing and snowing, but people are dedicated!

The Christmas in Ida Run- it was below freezing and snowing, but people are dedicated!

2.) Builds My Brain:- How does it build your brain? Shouldn’t it just build muscle? The true answer is that running and/or any kind of exercise builds stronger brains. Studies show that people that are in sports do much better in school than people that are not physically active. Running boosts up the Hippocampus part of the brain. This region of the brain is linked to learning and memory. A study that scientists did showed that running increased brain cells in all types of mice. The study later showed that running increases brain cells in humans too. Knowing that, and actually feeling it, makes me love running more.

3.) Running Keeps Me Going:- Whenever I do not run, I feel lazy and do not want to do anything. I know it sounds weird, but it’s true. People ask, shouldn’t you be more active when you do not run because you have ALL that energy left in you? No, when I do not run, I feel like there is nothing to do. I stay and watch T.V. for hours, and I cannot force myself to do much else. The days I run, I am active and feel active. I cannot stay in one place, and I have to be doing something. Sometimes, I go out for a bike ride AFTER the run, or sometimes I will read a book. Whenever I come back from a run, yes I do feel tired, but an hour later, I feel like I must do something. When I do not run, I feel more tired than if I did run. Sounds really really weird, but it’s true!

4.) Health:- Knowing that running is one of the hardest physical activities anyone can do, I still do it. A lot of my friends tell me I am nuts for running 8 miles nonstop, or 10 miles, or even more. They ask me why I don’t just go for a walk, or a bike ride. Running not only keeps me active, it also makes me smarter, relieves stress, and it keeps me healthy. Of course the other activities I mentioned earlier will keep anyone healthy, but I think running is the best way to get healthy and stay healthy. When I go for a bike ride, I’ll have to do close to 20 miles for me to feel the same way I would feel if I ran 5 miles. Burning calories on a bike or walking is nothing compared to running. Running for 45 minutes burns just about 600 calories going 8 minutes per mile pace, while biking for 45 minutes going 15 miles per hour pace burns just about 200 calories. So I would have to go out for a 2 hour and 15 minute bike ride to burn 600 calories, going that pace, while jogging for 45 minutes burns that amount. Saves me time and keeps me healthy. =)

Those are just 4 reasons I can think of that might relate to anyone that would read this. Everyone has reasons to why and what they love to do. Running is something I have enjoyed ever since I was a little kid. I hope after you read this blog, you would try and go out for a run. I am not saying to go out and run 10 miles(in fact, please do not do that….you should work your way up!!), just go out and jog for 15 minutes. After those 15 minutes, take an hour break, stretching, drinking water, etc. After that hour, you will see how you feel. It might not kick in until a week after you start running, but it might kick in 3 days after. It is a feeling I cannot describe, but if you try running, you will feel that feeling and know what I am talking about.

So as for me, I am going to keep running! What are you going to do?

-Have a great time with any exercise you do!! =)

The Present of Life

Jul 26 2009 | 1 Comment

This post is not like any of my other blog posts, but it is something that I really would like people to see. One of my good friends wrote this, and I think it is really cool, and that it will give those who read it a lot to think about. My friend is not a philosophy major, but after reading this, I really think that they should think about it(hint hint). So with their permission, and without further ado, I give you “The Present of Life”:

The Present of Life

Life always throws you curves. Some days you are happy and some days you are sad. You hear bad news but sometimes within an hour, you hear great news. Life can be easy sometimes, but hard other times. Sometimes you are in doubt of what you want, but other days you know what you want. It is truly like a roller coaster, up and down and full of many curves. Sometimes life flies by and other times it passes by slowly. Life can teach and can destroy. Life can be rough, but in a second, it turns into a smooth paved road. Life can be the opposite of that too, go from smooth sailing to wave torturing within minutes. Life can be so obvious sometimes, but many times it is a mystery. The answer to that mystery is right in front of someone, but choosing not to look for it is when life becomes that mystery. Sometimes life can seem real, and sometimes feels like a dream. Everyone can argue about what life is, but they can’t argue that there is life. You can argue what the purpose of life is, but you cannot argue that there is no purpose. Life has a purpose, but that purpose is up to you to figure out. You can go through life confused about your purpose, or you can go through your purpose confusing life itself.

shutterstock_roller_coaster
You can go through life in whatever way you choose to. Life can seem hard for a person and easy for the people around him. But no one ever says life is easy for me and hard for people around me. Everyone looks down upon their own life instead of looking up to the goodness of their life. There are times in life where you hit rock bottom, but those times in life is where the answer for the purpose of life comes. The rock bottom era is where you look around you and find someone or something. At that moment, life can change you, or you can change your life. That’s the time where life plays the biggest role on you or you play the biggest role on life. Rock bottom is where you choose to look up or look down. That is when the purpose of life is in your hand. That is when you look for help and ask life its purpose. That rock bottom era is when the saying I have heard many times comes in. “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

cliff
I have many friends and have seen a lot of rock bottoms, but one stands out more than anyone. To that friend I write this. Life can change a person and the people around, but there are always those people around that can change a person’s life. You can always upset everyone around you, but not everyone around you will upset you. You will hurt someone without being hurt and you will hurt someone alongside hurting yourself. They say life is not fair, but I say fair is what you make life to be. Life gives chances, and chances gives life. Life is full of mistakes, mistakes are full of life. Without mistakes, people won’t be living. If not living, no one will ever make mistakes. You live to learn through mistakes, and through mistakes you learn to live. It is what you do after those mistakes what makes you. The only big mistake, my friend, is the mistake of not correcting your mistake. From mistakes you hurt and get hurt, but the mistakes after hurting are the biggest mistakes. There will always be people around you who you hurt and will still help you. There will also be people around you who you do not hurt, but will never help you. Life is not the best, but you can make the best of life. Living in your past is a mistake. Learning from your past is not. “Learn the past, watch the present, and create the future.” But my friend, do not mistaken learning from the past as forgetting the past. Forgetting is not forgiving and not forgiving is never learning. If you never forgive your past, you never learned from it, if you never learned from it, you never created the future. Not living in the past does not mean to forget; forgetting does not mean never to forgive, because to start creating the future, you have to forgive. Forgiving is not just to people that hurt you; forgiving goes to yourself also. If you hurt someone from your mistakes, forgive yourself. If you were hurt, forgive those who hurt. My friend, forgive to forget but never forget to forgive. Without forgiving, the present will be forgotten. One day I received a gift, now pinned to my wall, with a quote on it saying “Live in the present, forgive your past.”

road
Life can take many swerves on you; it is how you handle those swerves. When life is on top of the peak, or in the bottom of the bottoms, never give up. Never give up on yourself and never let yourself give up on who is around you. Never look at the negative of the past, but always the positive. See the negative as a learning point and the positive as a result. Every time I picture you, I picture a smile. Every time I picture a smile, I picture you. Smile to life, it will smile back. Think positive always, because the biggest mistake is dwelling on the negative. Believe in the people around you, give chances, life will give you chances back. Remember the happy moments; forgive but never forget the hard times. If a person is in rock bottom, never let go of your hand. If that person reaches the mountain top, never let go of your hand either. You are one of those people in life that can change the life of people. Thank you for everything, and be grateful for everything. Just remember this saying “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it’s called the ‘present.’”

Reality TV Mania

Jul 23 2009 | 1 Comment

Hi, my name is Jaimie and I am addicted to watching reality television shows.

This is what I would probably say if there was a reality tv addiction counseling group. But as far as I know, there is not one, so I will just have to type out my woes here.

I usually do not watch much television during the summer(I would rather be outside), but since I have started working and taking classes this summer, all I want to do when I get home is chilax(a combination of “chill” and “relax” that I picked up from an unknown, and probably very un-hip source). So naturally, I started watching t.v. This has unfortunately led to my addiction to reality t.v. shows. And I am talking about all kinds of reality shows, because yes, in my mind, there are different catagories….They range from competitive to drama.

Recently, I have been watching a lot of the channel Bravo!. I watch all of their shows- Top Chef, The Fashion Show, all the Real Housewives, NYC Prep, and Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. O yes, I have watched them all. I guess you could call them my guilty pleasures because I definitely feel guilty wasting precious moments of my life watching them, but at the same time, they fascinate me. The problem is determining why they fascinate me.

The teens on NYC Prep

The teens on NYC Prep

Right now, I have been watching the show NYC Prep. It is kind of like Gossip Girl, except that they follow around the real teenagers that live in the ritzy areas of New York City. What baffles me, though, is why any parent in the world would let their children be followed around by a bunch of cameras during their day. It is crazy. I just do not know how anything good could come out of your children being followed around and interviewed by strangers. Especially during some of their most formative years. They are between the ages of 15 and 18. Crazy. Maybe that is what fascinates me though. Maybe it is the craziness of it all. Is this how low producers have gotten?

Kathy Griffin and her beloved award

Kathy Griffin and her beloved award

Another show, that I actually like, is My Life on the D-List with Kathy Griffin. She is a comedian, so it is really funny. Her whole goal is getting to be known, so that she can be considered an A-list star. To achieve her goal, she will do anything. It is very entertaining, and I recommend watching it to fellow reality t.v. show lovers.

The last show I want to talk about is called The Fashion Show. It is very similar to Project Runway. Up-and-coming designers make clothes and present them on the runway to judges. The judges eliminate a designer until the last one is standing (that means they win!). And guess what!? The finale is tonight! But there are sure to be more seasons because that is what reality t.v. shows thrive on. Seasons and seasons of one show.

The judges of The Fashion Show

So without prolonging this blog any further, I have to go further my addiction by watching the finale of The Fashion Show :P

Independence Day

Detroit Fireworks from Wayne State

Detroit Fireworks from Wayne State

Happy Fourth of July everyone!!! You are probably asking why I am typing this blog when I could be enjoying a good cookout and watching fireworks. Well, my answer to that is work. I had to work all day, and I have to work all day tomorrow. But hey, I am not complaining. The campground is fully booked this weekend, so they needed my help, and I am glad to oblige(is that how you spell it??) because it is so much fun working there! I am a people person and it was great seeing people out there making the most out of their holiday weekend and having tons of fun. The best part of today was when all of the kids(and some adults too!) decorated their bikes in red, white, and blue, and biked all together around the campground. One guy was dressed up like Uncle Sam! It was awesome, and some of the smaller children were so cute with their tricycles :-) It apparently is turning into a tradition there, and it was really cool. Many people also came to visit the lake and have a good time, even though it is pretty cold out today.

This is Uncle Sam in case you did not know ;)

This is Uncle Sam in case you did not know ;)

Usually on the fourth of July, I go to my aunt’s house and we have a big family party…I only say big because my mom’s side of the family is very large in number. It is so much fun because my aunt lives right on a lake. They have two jet skis, a speed boat, and a pontoon boat. They also have some kayaks, which are really cool. We swim all day and lay out on the floaty trampoline thing. I have spent all of my summers there since I was a baby, and I have only great memories. We also have great food- ribs, chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, baked beans, cheesy potatoes, fruit salad, cole slaw, vegetables, chips and salsa, and endless desserts…all in all, lots and lots of food. After our dinner, we usually go tubing with two tubes….we try to kick each other off. It is a lot of fun!! At night, we have a bonfire and make smores and watch the fireworks go off all around the lake. It is really cool :)

Even though I am not celebrating the fourth of July like I normally do, I am not sad because I have seen my fair share of fireworks this last week and a half. It all started with the Detroit fireworks last Wednesday. I have to say, it was a perfect fireworks day that day. It was soooo hot outside, and it actually felt like summer, unlike today. A couple of friends and I went to the top of Parking Structure 2 at Wayne State and watched them from there. It was awesome. There was a DJ and lots of people having fun. Even though we were not too close to them, we still got a good view of the fireworks, and we got to hear the music they were going off to. We went at the last minute, but at least we got to see them! And we did not have to wait in the huge lines of cars trying to get out of the city. I also have to say that the people who were staking out spots for the fireworks at Belle Isle at nine in the morning that day are nuts haha…But anyway, the fireworks from the Parking Structure were cool because we had a neat perspective. The fireworks went off right over the buildings in downtown Detroit, and it was really pretty.

I also saw some fireworks last night. I went to this event at a local church called Freedom Fest, and it was totally awesome. I had never heard of this before, and it is only located a couple of miles from my house. My friends asked me if I would like to go, and I decided I would go to check it out. It was HUGE for my small town. About 3,000 people came, 1,000 more than last year. They expect it will get bigger every year. There were live bands (and they played really good music), free food (like hotdogs, popcorn, icecream, etc.), kiddie entertainment(like face-painting, moonbouncing, etc.), and fireworks. I knew a lot of people, and that made it even more fun!! When I went there, I was not expecting that great of fireworks from such a small church, but they were actually GREAT! There were really awesome, big, explosive fireworks. And they went on for a good forty minutes. I felt like a little kid again- the finale went on so long that my friends and I were laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes and we couldn’t breathe. It was amazingly long- and then they went off AGAIN, and we almost DIED from laughter. We even ooohhh-ed and ahhhhhhhh-ed like we had never seen fireworks before. It was a great time, and I will probably never forget it.

Finale.

Finale.

But enough about my fourth of July experiences. Because even though fireworks and cookouts are a tradition for this day, I think that everyone should remember the real reason why we celebrate the fourth of July, or Independence Day. It was on this day, however many years ago, that our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence that basically said we are not taking any more bull- we are now an independent country, and we will fight for that right. And it is amazing that they had the audacity to say that, even though they knew that they were going up against the most powerful army of that time. I am so lucky to live in this country where I have the right to be anything I want to be. It is just not me either, everyone in this country has the right to be whatever they want to be, and the possibilities are endless. I will leave everyone on that note. I hope everyone is having a great day- Happy Independence Day everyone!!!!

My Summer Job

Jun 21 2009 | 1 Comment

totem-pole

This summer, I am only at school for three days a week. This made it really hard for me to find a job at home that would be flexible enough to let me work only certain days. Psh…in this economy and in this state, I was pretty sure I would not be able to find a job that was like that, especially since there are hardly any places to even apply for a job in my small town area. As I was searching around, I mentioned my dilemma to one of my good friends. She automatically said that her boss had asked her that day if she knew anyone that could work just on the weekends. It was PERFECT!!! I was sooooo excited!! Was that too good to be true or what?? I told her I was interested, and she got really excited too because we would be able to work together. O…and I forgot to mention that it was at a campground close to my house!! SWEET!! So she set me up with her boss and I was autimatically in, as soon as I filled out some papers.

The campground itself is very beautiful. (It is called Totem Pole Campground if you want to check it out :) ) When I first pulled in, I was very impressed. All of the years I had lived right around the corner from this place, but I had never seen nor heard too much about it. It is incredible to me. But anyway, when I came down the drive, there were huge trees on either side. It was beautiful. It makes a very good first impression :)

I work there only on the weekends- when it is usually busy. The first day of work, I worked on Memorial Day weekend. It was really busy!!! and partially frustrating…it is hard to learn what to do that fast!!! Luckily, my friend Mallory was my trainer, and she taught me well. And she was allowed to hang out with me all day, which was pretty cool. There were lots of cars coming through. Basically, I learned that my job is to be the “gatekeeper” even though there is technically no gate….When a car comes in, I ask what they are doing, and if they are there to visit, they give me money, and if they are there to just check out the place for a possible camping trip, I give them a brochure. There is more to it to that, but that is the really really quick way of putting it.

Our Beach Area- Lots of Fun!!!

Our Beach Area- Lots of Fun!!!

Usually, the people who come to camp at Totem Pole live less than an hour away, but sometimes we get people from out-of-state- as far away as Texas. It is pretty cool. A lot of visitors that just want to use the facilities for the day come from the surrounding towns ten miles or less away. There is a lot to do there….we have a “lake” that anyone can swim in(I put it in parenthesis because it is really just an oversized pond), horseshoes, beach volleyball, basketball, a playground, catch and release fishing, and shuffleboard. It really does have a fun atmosphere. We also have these really cool bikes the kids can rent for a fee. They kind of look like mini go-carts, except they have to pedal them. The kids really have fun on them. There is also this bike that is called the “Family Cart”. It is really big. Two people pedal and steer in the front, and very small children (50 lbs or less) sit in the back and ride. A lot of campers like to rent that one. I have to give the children the rules, but they usually follow them… Except yesterday when they were being very disrespectful with the bikes. They were flipping them over and crashing them into each other. That was bad.

The hardest part of my job right now is not knowing certain tidbits(isn’t that a funny word???) of information. People will ask me questions like “What are the rates for two nights of camping with a 5er trailer and what if they bring ten kids, is that extra???” I really do not know what that means, but I got that question today. 5er trailer? What is THAT? 10 kids? Are you kidding me?? Why on earth would you want to bring ten kids to a campground? That would NOT be a vacaton…I am pretty sure it would be closer to a nightmare…but anyway..that is the type of questions I get, and I guess you can see where that could be kind of frustrating. But if I do not know the answer, I just go inside the Office Store and ask my boss. She is used to wierd questions like that. But seriously, we had a couple camp there this weekend that had ten children of their own, but only brought eight. I give them props.

Everyone loves the train in our playground :)

Everyone loves the train in our playground :)

Besides not knowing the answers to people’s questions, another hard part for me, personally, is not being able to say no to rule-breakers. It is probably good that I am finding this out right now, before it is too late. I love to make people happy, so that is what makes it hard for me to say “no” to their antics. But I am getting over my problem. Today, these girls came into the store with barefeet. One of the rules for the store is that you cannot come in with barefeet. It is a safety hazard, and can potentially be a legal problem for us if they hurt themselves by slipping on the tile floor. I told them they could not come in!! Yay me!! But then they got really snotty and said some nasty things, but other than that, I was very proud of myself!! Yay!!! haha…yes, I was that excited.

But, yes, this is my summer-weekend job, and it is a lot of fun dealing with all the people, except the snotty ones of course. I hope to have a great rest of summer there in that very fun atmosphere :) Wish me luck!!!

Ohhhhhhh yeah!!!!!

Ohhhhhhh yeah!!!!!

So as I sit here watching the Redwing’s game and hoping for another win and another Stanley Cup, I will talk to you about a restaurant that is very near and dear to the boys’ hearts on the cross country team. I also find a special connection with this restaurant. I went on my first lunch date with my bf there. Sure, right now you are thinking, “Why is she talking about a national chain sub shop? We see those everywhere.” And “What a wierdo, her boyfriend took her there on their first date, and she liked it.” But I am telling you, this Blimpie, the Blimpie right off Cass Avenue about one/two blocks from campus, is the best Blimpie EVER!!! It is like the EXTREME Blimpie!!!

haha….sure, the name is not too attractive- “Blimpie” sounds like that if you eat there, you will balloon up and out like a “blimp” from the food, but it actually is really healthy, especially compared to other fast foods you might find in the student center- ‘ahem’ Taco Bell Express, KFC Express, and the everknown culprit Micky D’s. Blimpie actually did get its name by the “blimp” shape of their subs…not by what their food will do to you. I walk by Blimpie everyday on my way back from class, and it is oh so enticing to walk in and get one of their subs or wraps. It is basically really addicting.

So where exactly is this spectacular Blimpie Located? The answer to this question is 108 W. Hancock Street Detroit, MI. You can call their location at (313)831-0711. It is right off Cass Avenue. You can see it from Cass at least. To give you more of a clue of where to go, it is just South of campus. I hope you can find it. If you cannot, you are out of luck….just kidding. Just googlemap it :)

Is this place clean? Yes, I would say that this place is really clean. I get really grossed out by any kind of food that is spilled on my table at a restaurant- even if it is salt. I just cannot sit there and thoroughly enjoy my food if I have any suspicion that the place is in the least bit dirty. I guess you could say I am OCD about germs. I am a germ freak….I definitely get that from my dad. He keeps a bottle of purell(hand sanitizer) in the car, and everytime we get in the car he squeezes some into our hands. I don’t mind it, though. I like to feel clean :) But the point is, everytime I go into Blimpie and sit down, it is very very clean….I have never seen a table that has been dirty.

Is the service good? Yes, it definitely is. Like I said before, the restaurant is very clean- those tables do not clean themselves you know…so the people who work there care about the establishment. When you order, the “sub-makers” (I guess that is what you can call them) know exactly what to do. You tell them what you want, and they make it really fast. The service has never been slow there. The owner’s name is Nick, and he is very very friendly. He always has a smile for you, and asks how you are doing…My bf goes there so much(like every week, more than once), that he and Nick are friends…

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

What about the food….that is why I am reading this blog??? Welllll…..the food is amazing!! If you are a sub savant, this is a great place to go!! I especially like their wraps- they are my favorite. As I said before, the subs are in the shape of a blimp, hence the name “Blimpie”. And they are huge!!! And they are a great price for a lunch or a fast dinner- they are especially good for us broke college students ;) One wrap fills me up..and for a “tiny” girl, I have a BIG appetite(or so I am told). The ingrediants always taste and look fresh- which is very important to a quality sub taste. They serve subs, wraps, paninis, and although I have never ordered a salad from there, apparently they have a variety of salads too. Along with chips, brownies, cookies, pickles, candy, etc. etc.

What is MY favorite? I like the Chicken Ceasar on the spinach wrap. I take everything on it except jalepenos and the onions. I also put ceasar dressing on it and chipotle sauce on it…make sure you get it grilled if you wanna check it out: it makes a big difference. My boyfriend actually told me to get this one….I absolutely LOVE it!! mmmmmmmm….My boyfriend’s favorite is the buffalo chicken sub..get this grilled as well :-) And do not be shy when telling them what you want. You can have as many dressings on it as you want. Once, I saw someone get thousand island, italian, hot sauce, ceasar, and chipotle on one sub. I do not know if that turned out good, but hey, if that is what you like, you can get it….

Extras? They have a huge flatscreen you can watch while you are eating!! I have never been to a “fast food” place that has had a flat screen t.v. (if you know of another one in the Detroit area, please inform me) I know this is going a little overboard, but I find it amazing!! Also, this Blimpie is decked out in Wayne State decour…gotta love that!!!

So an overall rating should be placed for Blimpie compared to other sub shops. This is an average from 1-10 (with one being worst and ten being best):

Closeness to campus: 10
Overall Cleanliness: 8.5
Overall Service: 10
Tastiness of food: 9.5
Freshness of ingrediants: 8
Decour/Looks from outside: 5.5
Variety of food: 5

Overall Restaurant Review (drumroll puh-lease…………..)

8.5!!!!!

This is the first of (hopefully) many restaurants that I have gone to and will review in the Detroit area. Any suggestions or comments are very much appreciated :)

Yes I do.....

Yes I do…..

Recent Info: A zoning grant is placed on this restaurant that states it must be a sitdown restaurant with waiters….keep Blimpie in business by going into the restauraunt and petitioning for it to be classified as a fast food place. Thanks to all supporters :)

HOCKEY!!!

HOCKEY!!!

So now that the Redwings are up 3-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals, I thought it might be good to do a blog on why hockey is the best professional sport EVER to watch. I find it more entertaining than any other sport. That is why I am going to take a few paragraphs to talk about why other sports are less entertaining than hockey:

Baseball is probably the most boring sport to watch. If you go to a pro baseball game it is not so bad, but if you are watching from home, you will fall asleep. At least I do anyway. Sure, you will get excited for about one minute when someone gets a homerun, but after that, you might as well knock out for another thirty or forty minutes until the inning changes. My grandpa absolutely LOVES baseball, but then again, when he has the game on he is sleeping…I guess that says it all right there. Plus, with all the steroid abuse going on in this sport, you have to wonder if the players are honestly talented, or if they are just talented at taking the right combination of muscle enhancing steroids.

Professional basketball is not as boring as baseball…it is just really annoying. In my opinion, pro basketball players are way too overdramatic. Everytime someone touches them, they are on the ground for ten minutes crying. If they act like that, then why do they have all of those tough-looking tatoos and haughty attitudes?? They should have a baby bottle in their hands, not a basketball. Their egos are wayyyyy out of line. I also think that the referees are unfair in basketball. I guess you could say that about any sport, but I think the officials are the worst in basketball. This is probably because the refs have more chances to call fouls. But I guess if a player is acting like he is dying on the court, they probably feel obligated to call a foul even if it clearly was not.

Football is pretty entertaining, but not as much as hockey. And professional football is not entertaining at all. I guess I just don’t understand why people like watching a bunch of big boys try to crush one another. It kind of reminds me of the gladiator days when people would go to the coliseum to watch other people get killed. Today, people go to the football stadium to watch other people hurt each other. I guess people cannot help but like it, though. The game probably makes some of their primal instincts come out. I must say, though, that college football is pretty cool. The atmosphere is really fun. Between the bands, tailgates, and college students….it is an awesome time. Pro football games do not have all of that, so I think that that contributes to why it is more boring.

oooooooooo yeah...

oooooooooo yeah…

So now that I have bashed all of the other major professional sports, I will talk about how much I like watching professional hockey :P Maybe some cities are not as into hockey as Detroit is, but that is probably why Detroit is called Hockeytown. We love our hockey…not only are we in the Stanley Cup Finals right now, but we have won eleven Stanley Cups in the past.

Very talented players :-)

Very talented players :-)

I think hockey is the best sport to watch because it is fun during the regular season, as well as the playoffs. It is a very intense sport that is exciting no matter what part you start watching at. When I am watching a game, I am amazed at how much talent the players have. They have to skate backwards, forwards, and to the side…all while carrying a stick and trying to control the puck. No steroid can help you do that. And what amazes me more is that they do not ever fall down unless pushed or shoved to the ice. I have only skated a couple of times, and I could not get the hang of it. I would fall down even if no one was on the ice haha.

Penguins vs. Redwings

Penguins vs. Redwings

Hockey is also exciting because the game can change very quickly if you let off for even ten seconds. It does not matter if one team looks like they are in control because they have had the puck on the opposing team’s side for a while, and have shot the puck twenty times. That can change real fast when the other team gets the puck, shoots one time, and scores. It happens very quickly. And when one team gets ahead, things can turn very brutal. Certain players will start to play very dirty. Sticks get shoved into faces, players try to trip one another, and then they will start mouthing off to each other and get into fights. Hockey fights can get pretty interesting. As an example: Last night, during game 5 at The Joe, Datsyuk, who had just come back from a foot injury, got whacked really hard on that same foot by Talbot(a Penguins player) I just have to say that that move was a little too dirty, and that Talbot probably only did that because he was losing. But O well.. Too BAD so SAD penguins…you lost FAIR and SQUARE. WOAH!! Lots of rhyming skillz happening right hur…;) But anyway, that play really was intentional and downright low of Talbot.

The fans also make this sport very interesting. They really get into it. They are all decked out in fan gear and some even paint their faces. I remember when I was really little, my parents went to a Redwings game and painted their faces. I thought it was cool at the time, but now that I think about it, I probably should have been embarassed ;) And as stated above, the fans also egg on fights.

GO REDWINGS!!!

GO REDWINGS!!!

Sooooo….if you are not a hockey fan yet, I really think you should be. It is an awesome sport that you cannot help but watch. In fact, you have at least one more chance to watch a Wings game before the playoffs end. The next game is June 9th at 8:00PM on NBC.

GO REDWINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a new love in my life…and no, it is not a boy or a new baby….actually, it is kind of like a baby…it is little kitten!!!

My new Love <3

My new Love <3

To me, this should not be as exciting as I think it is…this is because there are kittens everywhere you go around my house. And I must stress that they are FREE!!! In fact, people actually WANT to get rid of them because they can multiply like rabbits if you do not get them fixed.

So anyway, when I was at home this weekend, I went over to my friend’s house to hang out and watch the Redwings’s game(woo woo Stanley Cup Playoffs!!!). I rarely get to see my friends, so it was a rare treat to go hang out and have a cookout with them. During the intermission of the game, my friend mentioned that he had some kittens. My boyfriend and I had to go look. When we saw them they were sooooo cute!!!! There were a lot of them!! And they were all different colors…there were gray ones, black ones, white ones, black and white ones, and one little peachy colored one. I wanted one so bad, but I knew my dad would object to having another animal around the house. So, pretty sad and dejected, I went back to the barn to watch the rest of the game with my friends. My friend was pretty sad too because he wanted to get rid of them….

The next day, I told my family about the kittens. I started joking around with my dad and saying that “I really really want one, can I pleeeaaaaaase have one?? Please??” Yes, I probably sounded like a two-year old. To my complete surprise, he said that I could go get one!!! YAY!!!!!!! I was soooooo happy!!!! And so was my friend when I called to tell him I could get one!! So we drove over there. When we got there, I think the kittens had gotten larger in number over night because there were wayyyyy more kittens there than the previous night. Some were really really tiny too. Too tiny to bring home. They had not even opened their eyes yet!! TOO cute!! There were so many that I had my boyfriend pick one out…..he loves cats. He had a vey hard time trying to decide…it was between a black and white one and a peachy colored one. He was having such a hard time deciding that my friend told us he had to go soon….so we had better pick one out fast. In the end, though, we decided to pick the peachy one. He was very friendly. The only thing that made us think twice about getting him was that he was sick. He had a cold and I think he had a stye in his eye.

Stanley sleeping on his first day at my house....

Stanley sleeping on his first day at my house….

On the ride home, the kitten was very scared. He had left his family for the first time, so I think he was a little freaked out. It was also his first car ride. When we got back to my house, my littlest brother mauled him….he loves any kind of animal. We left the kitten alone for a while, but when we had some free-time, we got him out of the cage to play. We had to decide on a name for him!! I think it was my mom who said we should name him Stanley because the Redwings are playing in the Stanley Cup Finals!!! It was perfect!! I love hockey and the Redwings, so I absolutely loved it!! My boyfriend started calling him “Lord Stanley” because the cup was named after a Lord named Stanley I guess…haha…

The only problem with Stanley was that he did not want to play at all. All he wanted to do was sleep. We thought something was wrong with him, especially after he had been sleeping for six hours straight. I had him on my lap, and my dog came in the room, and Gizmo smelled something, but he could not find it. He sniffed to my lap and started licking Stanley on the ear. Stanley opened his eyes, looked at Gizmo, and turned the other way to sleep. Gizmo started going crazy, but Stanley did not even notice. That definitely made us wonder if he was okay. His cold and his eye started to worry me. My mom said to put a teabag on his eye…it works for humans..why not a kitten?? So I did that day..it was not very hard to get him to sit still seeing as he did not move much..and the next day, his eye was back to its normal size!!! I was soooo happy!! :-)

Stanley and his mouse!!

Stanley and his mouse!!

Now, he is a happy and healthy kitten. He is also very smart- he is already potty trained!!!! I love him to death, and he is very very spoiled!!! I am still in school, so I do not get to see him until the last half of the week, but I love him all the same and cannot wait to see him when I go home!! It will be sad in the fall when I really will not get to see him :( So if you want a kitten, just give me a call :) They are free and sooo cute!!!

He loves small and tight places!!

Me and my sister at the Pussy Cat Dolls’ Concert in Dtown. None of their music describes us, but this is the only picture I have of us at a concert :)

Last Thursday, my sister had an assignment for her English class where she had to pick five songs that described herself the best. She took a lot of time on it, which is unusual for her because she usually just likes to get things done, and she really seemed to enjoy it. She loves music, and so do I, so I decided to use her assignment as a blog post. So here are my five songs and why I chose them:

1.) Running by No Doubt: This one is the most obvious of the songs I have chosen. The first lyrics in the song say, “Run. Running all the time.” I know that No Doubt probably did not mean literally running, but I took it that way. I run a lot, and it is tiring but satisfying. On some days, all I do is train for cross country. But I still do not mind it. I have been all over Michigan’s trails and roads because of vacations and camps. In fact, I have run in the upper peninsula(in the east and west), and the lower peninsula(in the east, west, and everywhere in between. The upper peninsula was where our cross country camp was this year, and also where I broke my wrist this year. It is also where my great grandparents live…we go to visit them almost every summer. I have run for a long time, and it will always be a part of me even if I stop when I get older. That is why I have chosen No Doubt’s song as one of my five songs that describe me best.

Running video: No Doubt is soooo awesome!!!!!! This is the live acoustic version…the real music video would not work for some reason….

2.) You’ve Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story: I absolutely love Disney, so I had to pick one of their songs. Toy Story is a classic movie from Disney, and one of my favorites. One of the movie’s most famous songs probably describes me best. I have a lot of great friends who are the nicest people I have ever met, and probably will ever meet. Their friendship means so much to me. Whether I have had a good day or a bad day, they always cheer me up. Separation because of college has made it more of a challege to keep in touch, but they are always in my thoughts, and when we come home, we always get together and have a lot of fun. We have had a lot of great times, but we have also had a lot of tough times. I know it is cliche, but we have really been with each other through the thick and the thin. When times are not so great though, we help each other and get through it. I am very blessed by their presence in my life, and I thank God for every one of them each day.

3.) Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cindy Lauper: This song probably describes a lot of girls, but I think it is so true!! All girls really want is to have fun!!! For example, my little brother(who is only one year younger than me) gets to go anywhere he wants to…no one gives him a curfew. My sister, however, typically has to be back home between ten and eleven on weekends. She just wants to hang out with her friends, but my parents stick to their curfew. She always complains that my bro gets to stay out with his friends. She just wants to have fun!!! Anyway, this song describes me because I love to just have fun. I love to make everywhere I go a fun time…whether it is going to a park on a sunny day, watching a scary movie at night with some friends, playing a board game with my littlest brother on a rainy day, or even going to class!! I just wanna have fun!!! I know, this song is a pretty corny song to describe myself, but it is all good. :P

4.) Beautiful Day by U2: I have absolutely loved this song ever since I was in middle school!!! And I love the lyrics!!! I think this song describes me because I think that every day is a beautiful day. When I hear this song when I am having a boring or bad day, it makes me realize that I have a great life, and every day is awesome. This song keeps me very positive. This time of year especially makes me remember this song. I love spring, and I think it is the most beautiful season in Michigan. During the first few weeks in May, trees start budding and flowers start to bloom. Everything is very fresh and new. I think that Wayne State’s campus looks especially nice during this time. When you walk around campus, take time to enjoy the nice weather and scenery.

5.) Don’t Stop Believing by Journey: I love this song, and I am pretty sure all of Detroit loves it too!! I have heard it being played at some of the professional sporting events in Detroit(at least once a game for the Redwings) It is a great feel-good song that has awesome lyrics. This song describes me because I have never stopped believing in myself. I think that not believing you can do something is the worst thing you can do to yourself. I have always believed that I can achieve what ever I want if I work hard at it. By believing in myself, I have gotten to where I am today. Even when I have had setbacks, I always forge through them. And I will never stop believing….my next goal is to graduate from college with a degree in biology and to also go to medical school. I know it will be hard, but I believe that I can accomplish this goal if I set my heart on it.

So those five songs are the songs that describe my personality and my life. I can think of more songs that describe me, but I think that it will get a little boring to read. The five songs I have listed are in no particular order, in fact, I think that all of them describe me equally. What are your five songs???
