Contract/Grant Professor (open rank) of Science Education to assume the duties of Director of Science and Mathematics Improvement (SAMPI)

Western Michigan University invites applications for the Director of the Science and Mathematics Program Improvement (SAMPI) program, beginning January 2018 at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Contract/Grant Professor). Successful candidates must have : 1) doctoral degree and experience in a STEM or STEM education field; 2) knowledge/skills in program evaluation/educational research; 3) excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to work with diverse clients external to the University (K-12 educators, higher education faculty, and informal educators); and 4) administrative experience, including grant and contract acquisition and administration, budget and personnel management, and unit operations. The SAMPI director is responsible for directing overall administration of the unit (0.25 FTE), providing instruction in the Mallinson Institute of Science Education (0.25 FTE) and conducting externally-funded evaluation, research, and other programmatic activities (approximately .50 FTE). The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has placed WMU among 76 public institutions in the nation designated as research universities with high research activity. Position: 12-month position at the rank of assistant/associate/full Contract/Grant Professor of Science Education, starting January 1, 2018.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in an area related to science or math education, or to evaluation methodologies. Must have a background in a STEM or STEM Education field and knowledge/skills in program evaluation/educational research
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to work with clients external to the University (K-12 educators, higher education faculty, and informal educators)
  • Administrative experience, including grant and contract acquisition and administration, budget and personnel management, and unit operations

Preferred Qualification:

  • Demonstrated global and/or multicultural competency

Responsibilities: The Director of SAMPI has three primary responsibilities: 1) direct overall administration and operation of the unit (approximately .25 FTE); 2) provide instruction in the Mallinson Institute for Science Education (.25 FTE) and 3) conduct externally-funded evaluation, research, and other programmatic activities (approximately .50 FTE). This position reports to the Director of the Mallinson Institute for Science Education.

Department:  Western Michigan University’s Science and Mathematics Program Improvement conducts client-centered, user-friendly program evaluations and professional consultations for K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, the state departments of education, nonprofit organizations and other education entities. SAMPI emphasizes program improvement and uses a collaborative, consensus-building approach to facilitate active involvement of clients in the evaluation and program improvement process. SAMPI’s team consists of researchers and staff with backgrounds in science, mathematics, K-12 and higher education settings, data management, statistics, and technology. SAMPI also draws on the expertise of WMU faculty as well as collaborators across the country. The SAMPI team uses a range of techniques, including standard evaluation procedures, research, professional development activities, materials and assessment studies, and other project-specific consultation services.
