We are seeking VOLUNTEERS to help up promote STEM and Literacy in Title I schools throughout Detroit for the 2016-2017 academic school year.
Athletes for Charity, the Detroit Lions and the Ford Motor Company Fund joined forces in 2015 to provide innovative STEM Youth Literacy Initiatives to benefit the youth of Detroit, MI. The program aims to improve learning outcomes and student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while creating pathways to success in post-secondary education and 21st century careers. The initiative consists of book distributions of age-appropriate STEM themed titles to students and incentives to encourage reading and writing. Introductions to STEM literature and careers is a recurring theme throughout the academic school year. Various Detroit Lions players have signed up to volunteer their time to serve as STEM Principals and Assistant Principals for the Day.
We would like to extend an invitation to members of the WSU College of Education faculty, staff and students to join us as special guests mentors, lecturers and presenters for the Pre-Kindergarten though 8th grade sessions we currently host at Dixon Educational Learning Academy. WSU College of Education faculty, staff and students will help engage the students in STEM and support their literacy development.
Are you willing to VOLUNTEER 2-4 hours of your time once a year or every month to help make a difference and inspire future generations of STEM Professionals? Volunteers are asked to sign up for 2 hour increment at minimum i.e. 9:00 am – 11 pm (arrival by 8:45 am) or 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm (arrival by 11:45 am) or for the entire time frame of 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Volunteers may choose to serve as mentors once a year or multiple times a year, dependent on your availability.

Please note that in order to volunteer for with us, you will be required to complete a mandatory Background Check via DPSCD as well as a Volunteer Waiver Form for Athletes for Charity.
