About
I am currently a Sophomore majoring in Pre-Medicine/Biology at Wayne State University, and I plan to take the Medical College Admission Test i.e. the MCAT this time next year in order to get into medical school...so wish me luck. I aspire to work as a pediatrician at Children's Hospital. I am a member of the social/service sorority Alpha Epsilon Phi; one of the best decisions I have made since attending Wayne State University. If you see me around campus don't hesitate to say "HEY!"

A scary movie marathon you say? I love scary movies…especially good ones. I haven’t seen a GOOD scary movie in a long time, in fact I don’t remember the last scary movie I’ve seen that was actually scary. Any suggestions? I usually end up seeing B-rated “scary” movies, you know, with a bunch of teens going on a road trip and then some “scary” or creepy entity kills them off one by one and either one teen or a female and male usually end up being the last to live at the end. Yes, I know how the story goes….it’s getting quite boring though. I want to see a REAL scary movie…I’m talking like “The Exorcist” 1973 scary, now that was scary…I think that was the last scary movie I have seen. Sad….these writers need to step up their scary movie game. Halloween is coming out and I think that’s when “Saw 6″ is coming out too…I didn’t even know there was a Saw 6 until a few days ago. I am not going to see it because after the third Saw movie I was completely lost and had no clue what was going in with the characters. After seeing the 4th one, I didn’t even really think it was that good, and I mean I think some people see it just because it’s “Saw 6″ and they want to stay updated on the movie. And at the end of the Saw movies, when they do like the little recap of the whole movie with the infamous Saw theme music and reveal something surprising, that’s when I get most lost…my brother seems to know everything about what happens, and I’m asking him “who is that?” “what happened with him?” “so did he die?” “who is that little boy?” “is that woman the killer?” And I just got so tired of that so quick, so whatever.

But now that I have gotten completely off topic, let me revisit what I was actually supposed to be posting about. The SCARY MOVIE MARATHON at WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY! It’s this Monday October 26th from 6pm-Midnight. And from 6pm-8pm they will be showing “The Others”, from 8pm-10pm “The Grudge”, and from 10pm-12pm “The Exorcist”. If I don’t have too much homework and other things I have to do you might catch me there. It’s free, in the student center building lower level. See you all!!!

Angry?

Oct 24 2009 | No Comments

I found this great article on the Wayne State Human Resources website and I just wanted to share. I’ts about overcoming the feelings of being angry. I think pretty much everyone gets angry at some point or another but the issue isn’t getting angry, it is the actions and emotions expelled when you get angry and how you go about controlling them. Anger is a problem when it becomes violent bouts of rage, so intense that those around you fear you and what you are capable of.

Feeling Angry? Get Over It!

You’ve had a bad week. A week to end all weeks. Everything that could’ve gone wrong has. The car battery died on Monday. You had to locate back-up child care on Tuesday after your babysitter called in sick. You had an argument with your spouse yesterday. It’s now Thursday afternoon and your boss dumped a report in your lap with a due date of Monday, whittling away at your plans to take Friday off. To top it off, your computer just went down, short-circuiting your attempt to get on top of that report.

As the muscles in your neck and shoulders tense up and your head starts pounding, you realize that you are about to lose it! The irritation and frustration you have felt building all week is about to climax into a fit of intense anger! But you tell yourself that getting angry won’t do any good and it might actually make things worse! You’re stuck. Now you’re headed for a meltdown.

Unfortunately, this scenario is all too familiar in today’s fast-paced world. To make matters worse, anger is an emotion most of us feel uncomfortable with and uncertain how to manage well. Mental health professionals agree it is important that we manage angry feelings effectively. But how?

Let’s take a look at anger. Anger is a normal human emotion, like love, sadness, fear and joy. Anger, like all feelings, is always valid. Not all expressions of anger are healthy. When anger is suppressed, depression, obesity and other physical symptoms, such as headaches and high blood pressure can develop. Anger inappropriately turned outward, or externalized, usually takes the form of blaming, aggressive behavior and even violence.

How we express anger is something we learn as children. Because we learn how to experience anger, we can also learn how to manage it. This four-step approach may help you better manage angry feelings:

Admit it.

Explore it.

Express it.

Drop it.

The next time you feel angry, admit it. Don’t deny feeling angry or try to cover it up. When you take responsibility for your feelings, you can then choose how to express them responsibly. Dispel personal myths about anger such as, “If I get angry, I will be rejected.”

Then, explore why you’re angry—identify the source of your feelings. Often your anger is caused by the belief that someone is acting unfairly or some event is unjust. The thoughts that generate anger more often than not contain distortions and unrealistic expectations. Adjusting your expectations is the simplest solution.

Expressing your anger is the next step. Try to put yourself in the driver’s seat before expressing yourself. That is, find a way to calm down a bit first. Put some distance between yourself and the source of your anger by taking a break from the situation, going for a brisk walk and taking a few deep breaths. Stop—understand your motives and think about your options before you express yourself. When you can discuss the issue without exploding, do so. It is perfectly legitimate to say you are angry or displeased with another person. Use constructive language rather than accusations, threats or name-calling. Use “I” statements to assertively communicate your feelings and to state requests. For example: “I feel angry that you lied to me. I would like you to be honest with me in the future.”

The final step is often the hardest. Once you’ve let the object of your anger know how you feel, drop it. Whether the other person changes or not, you’ve done all you can to express your anger in a healthy manner and influence the situation. Now you’ve got to let go and move on.

Sometimes we stubbornly hold onto our anger, sulking and punishing those around us because we feel we have a right to be angry. No question about it, anger is legally permitted in this country! The crucial issue is this: is it to your advantage to hold onto your anger? Chances are that when you rid yourself of it, you will experience greater joy, peace, productivity and intimacy.

Dos and don’ts when you’re feeling angry

Do ask yourself: “What is another way of looking at this?”

Don’t tell another person what she or he “should” think or feel.

Do take time out to de-escalate, clarify your position and consider your options.

Don’t displace your anger by yelling at the kids or driving aggressively.

Do be specific when you introduce your gripes and requests.

Don’t assume you know what others are thinking or that you have all the information about a situation.

Do try to appreciate the fact that people have different perspectives.

Don’t use unfair tactics such as blaming, labeling or threatening.

Do strive for a “win-win” resolution by considering compromise and negotiation.

Don’t ever use violence to express your anger or resolve problems.

I have never eaten at the Underground Grill, but I hear it is really tasty. I’m sort of a health nut so I *TRY* to avoid fastfood (ahem; keyword: try). When I do eat fastfood, I’ll choose healthier options such as Subway instead of McDonald’s, but I do like trying new things and I haven’t been to the Underground Grill but once and that was to pass through to class. There’s ping pong tables, video games, televisions, plenty chairs, and food. When I did go down there, it was a group of students playing some game…I think Super Smash Brothers, and they looked oh so serious. You would have thought they were thinking about their next move in gambling a million dollars at a blackjack game.  Their concentration was that intense. I quietly walked on along, being careful not to disturb any of these game addicts.

Besides that, it looks like a really neat place to just chill and have fun with friends while enjoying a few snacks. Now that I’m blogging about it, you know I will have to go check out some of the food and let you all know how it was.

On Monday October 5, 2009, Pizzeria Venti is doing another $1 slice day from 11am-3pm. It’s one limit per customer so don’t go in there trying to buy out the restaraunt. You might be able to leave and go back and purchase another though. Not valid with any other offer. Choose from cheese, pepperoni or tomato & basil pizzas. Pizzeria Venti is located in the Towers Residence Hall on Reuther Mall near Anthony Wayne Drive.

I love Pizzeria Venti, but some people don’t. Now let me describe it as this: The taste is a little different than your average pizza place…they’re authentic and use %100 real cheese. It tastes…hmmm…a lot fresher, than typical places. There’s not grease seeping out of the crust. And they also have not just pizza but a bunch of other italian related options to choose from such as pastas, salads, stuffed pizzas, desserts, and etc.

But here is a link for a coupon, so just check it out and let me know what you think.

HI GUYS! I have been gone for such a very long time now…5 weeks to be specific…I am sooooooooooooo sorry, but hey school started back and it is all they’re fault, every single bit! No, jk. These past 5 weeks, I have been beyond busy…so busy that I have devised a new way of sleeping. I call it interval sleeping. You know like sleeping 2 hours, waking up in the middle of the night (or shall I say morning) and study 3 hours, sleep 2, study 3…you get the jist of it right? I had no idea what I was thinking when I decided to take 6 (half of which are very demanding) classes. I am currently taking 3 online classes: Nutrition, Dance History, and Medical Terminology, and my classes that I have to actually be present in are Chemistry, Chemistry lab, and Math ESP. I try my best to stay up and complete all my work at once…but sometimes I just can’t stay up for 24 whole hours, studying without going to sleep that long is not even beneficial…so might as well take a nap. (Zzzzzzzzzzz) *YAWN* Sorry, was falling asleep over my laptop. I actually have a pile of homework I need to do right now (grrrr), and the thing is there is ALWAYS something to do. It’s nothing like high school (duh), where your teachers give you an assignment and you finish it a couple hours, study and everything is done. NO! Professors usually give you the semesters schedule, included in it are due dates for every assignment, exam dates, deadlines for chapter readings, and etc. So when you think you’re done, you are surely fooling yourself. There is no such thing as being done ok, the workload is neverending…when you finish one thing you just go on to the next…and the next….and the next…and the next. Until fall semester is over and you get a very short break until winter semester, well not really a break, it’s more like the period between the time it takes for you to stand up and sit down.

I can’t complain though because all of my professors are really cool hardworking people. No lazy professors this semester, thank goodness. And you know, some students love getting the easy professors who tell you that you don’t really need to come to class because everything is on blackboard, miss a day a week of class, uses the same exact exams over and over again every year, and are not thorough in their teaching, but let me say it is not at all a good thing especially if you are looking to take a higher level class at another time. It costs too much to not do things right the first time around. A lot of professors have reputations that their students make of them, so ask around…I’m sure someone can tell you a bit about the prof.

Well then, I am going to go start my math homework after I take a bathe (hopefully I won’t decide to go to sleep afterwards and not get anything done) and there may or may not be another blog post up tomorrow. We’ll see, all depends on how much I get done by tomorrow night.

I thought this video was hilarious and I just wanted to share….

Degree Audit

Aug 13 2009 | No Comments

Yesterday morning I received the following e-mail from Wayne State University…

wsu

A change in the General Education program that eliminates the Exposure Area requirement for students starting immediately has been approved by the Wayne State University Board of Governors.  This means if you have not met any of the requirements for Cultural Diversity (CD); Science, Technology, and Society (ST); and Ethical Inquiry (EI), you will no longer be required to do so.  All other General Education requirements are unchanged.

Our records indicate that you are registered for one or more of the courses designated by CD, ST, or EI (Exposure Areas).  Please review your schedule for Fall term to see if you would want to change your registration.  If you have questions please contact the advising office at univadvising@wayne.edu and an advisor will respond to you within two days.

You may review your revised program requirements at STARS for Degree Audit at http://stars.wayne.edu/ .  Many of the Exposure Area courses meet other general education requirements, so you should review how the course is used in your program before making a decision about selecting another course.

Questions?  Please contact us at degreeaudit@wayne.edu.

Since I have already completed these “exposure areas” I guess this e-mail doesn’t apply to me…I think since they are no longer requiring us to fulfill these requirements that we should get our money back for taking them. That’s just me though. I fulfilled classes that I had no interest in taking or that was not at all relevant to my major, but I took them…why? Becuase the school said I needed to…now they’re saying I don’t. Grrr, talk about a waste of thousands of dollars I could have use on more important classes, grr…but it’s ok, I’m sure I won’t be getting any money back any time soon, so I’ll just complain a little and move on. But I guess it’s a good thing for people who haven’t taken them yet, I’m sure they are very much pleased.
